What Is Visual Culture?

This is the critical examination of various images  and the impact on the society. We always encounter a barrage of images on a daily basis from the time we wake up. This images can be from social media posts, advertisements, photographs, logos, and more. Yet, we rarely pause to analyze them deeply. Now we understand that images shapes our understanding of society, culture, and identity.

But why is visual culture significant, and what role does it play in shaping our collective consciousness? With the rise in digital technology, visual communication has become a norm in our lives (Cronin & Dobbie, 2019). We have stream of images that compete for our attention and allegiance. The images not only reflect societal norms and values but additionally has the capacity to contribute to their construction and perpetuation

Visual culture is a powerful vehicle which is used for representation and identity formation. Every person and communities assert their presence, voice their concerns, and challenge that they experience when it comes to power and privilege. The same images can also act as a tool that can be used for oppression, marginalization, and cultural hegemony.

Canada his a country where multiculturalism is celebrated. The country considers it as a cornerstone of national identity. However, whenever there are instances of marginalization of the minority when it comes to media representation, alot of questions is raised(Li, 2019).  Canadian media continues to grapple with issues of racial and cultural discrimination.

We must always remain vigilant in our scrutiny of the images that surround us. We might start to question the existing quo and imagine a more inclusive and equitable society by examining the ways that visual media create and maintain social hierarchies and inequities.
